| I was born in
Newtownards Co. Down in 1969. I was fortunate that from an early
age my parents encouraged me to 'mess about' with all manner of
things. I was given lots of paints and old rolls of newspaper which
I painted on the back of. I was a solitary child and although I
have an older sister I never minded being on my own.
I am very lucky
that I am truly at my happiest when I am painting. I
studied design
at university, but through my time there I continued to paint and
work part-time for The National Trust at Mount Stewart, the gardens
there set the seed for my love of flower painting.
I supplied a local
gallery near to where I now live, in Greyabbey. They were very
encouraging to me and in 1993 I was offered a solo show. I am mainly
a watercolour painter and I love the unpredictability of the medium
and the way it has a life and a spirit of it's own.
Painting is never a
struggle to me and although I may not put brush to paper for
sometimes up to two weeks my mind is never idle, I use this time to
work out colours and compositions in my head. This is a method that
suits the way I work,
I'm a great
day-dreamer. I am a keen gardener a love to paint in my own space.
I take little colour sketches and notes which I use in the darker
months. Flower painting is my greatest passion. I also paint
landscapes and abstracts, for me it's not so much about the subject
matter, although important, I am a painter and it's the paint that
excites me and drives me on.
My landscapes are
different to my flower studies, being dark, moody and stormy, but
they let me tap into a broader range of colours that I would not
normally use in my flower work. As long as I am painting I'm happy.
Thats what I am, a painter.
